Chris Said said yesterday he voluntarily withdrew his candidature to contest the European parliamentary elections on behalf of the Nationalist Party.

Dr Said, mayor of Nadur, said he decided not to contest the elections in the best interest of Gozo. He said he believed that the only way Gozo could be represented in the European parliament would be to have one Gozitan candidate, supported by the biggest possible number of Gozitans.

On Friday, PN leader Lawrence Gonzi chose Gozitan Anton Tabone, the Speaker's son, to be among the eight party candidates for the June elections.
