A door used to close the arch which pierces the bastion of the Cittadella in Victoria, Gozo, cost €398,443.

The mechanised door was installed as part of the extensive restoration of the walled town and hides the breach in the bastions made in the 1950s to enable easy access for the procession with the statue of Sta Marija.

The restoration project included the reopening of the original gate through the bastions.

The restoration project started several years ago and completed last month, included consolidation of the bastions, installation of new infrastructural services in the town, new paving, rehabilitation of the façade of various buildings such as the law courts and the cathedral, a clean-up and embellishment of the ditch and conversion of a former British-built reservoir into a visitors’ centre.

The Gozo Ministry said the new door to cover the arch was built by Camray Co Ltd and its subcontractor UK Loco of the UK.

Referring to reports in other media, the ministry denied that this company has any links with the company which produced the bells for the Gozo Cathedral. It also denied that the motor powering the new door is not working.
