Gozo CPD maritime unit currently has no boat

The boat started developing engine issues in May

The Gozo maritime unit currently has no operational boat as the RHIB assigned to the section has developed engine issues.

“The Gozo unit has one RHIB (Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat), which unfortunately recently developed intermittent engine issues, and repairs are expected to take around two weeks,” a spokesperson for the Home Affairs Ministry said.

The ministry did not say how long the vessel has been out of action, but sources said that the vessel developed engine problems in May and became fully unavailable in July. The spokesperson said rescue efforts at sea have not been affected, as the Rescue Coordination Centre makes use of army assets as well as other CPD vessels.

“As is standard practice, the Civil Protection Department continues to work closely with the Armed Forces of Malta and the Malta Police Force to further strengthen resources and enhance emergency coverage.”

While the RHIB is being repaired, Gozo marine personnel are training and supporting other stations as needed.

To further strengthen resources and enhance emergency coverage, the Gozo Marine Section will soon be relocated to Comino, the spokesperson said.

“This move will allow the department to provide direct fire and rescue services from the island, supporting both ongoing projects and the growing year-round activity in the area. The service will continue to complement operations around Gozo and Malta.”
