Gozo's Festival Mediterranea 2005 kicked off with a bang over the weekend with a concert by the 60-strong Danish orchestra Amatørsymfonikerne.

The well-received concert, held at St George's Basilica in Victoria, featured works by Nielsen, Reinecke, Holmboe as well as Beethoven's Symphony no. 8.

Festival Mediterranea continued with a classic jazz concert yesterday which saw the participation of the Oxford Girls Choir and Colin Good- arranger, co-producer and pianist at the heart of Bryan Ferry's latest albums.

The festival, which is in its fourth edition, continues during the week with several music and history-related events, including a three-evening conference From Tarxien To Rome with Dr David Trump as main speaker.

The highlight of the festival is a double representation of Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème, featuring local star tenor Joseph Calleja.
