The Gozo Tourism Association has welcomed the agreement between the government and the Spanish company Helicopteros del Sureste for the provision of an air service between the two islands but said the fares to be charged could put people off from using the service.
Contacted by The Times, a spokesman for the Ministry for Competitiveness said the normal cost of a return trip between the two islands will be Lm50 and a one-way trip Lm30. Gozitans, students and the elderly will pay Lm26 for a return trip and Lm16 one way.
The association said the company chosen was the biggest helicopter company in Europe and it was capable of offering the service at very good quality and security levels.
It said, however, that the prices as announced were too high and could lead operators and tourists to stop using the service. Such prices would make Gozo a more expensive destination and they should be revised.
It said that all possible efforts should be made for the air service between the two islands to be given through a fixed wing aircraft.
