Gozo history through stamps on show at Xewkija windmill

Exhibition open to visitors until December 8

The restored Xewkija windmill is currently hosting an exhibition set up by two Gozo Philatelic Society committee members. The display features philatelic material connected with our nation’s history.

Society president Anthony Grech is exhibiting the 2009 definitive set through first-day covers and hand-illuminated highlights. The stamps offer shots from the Għar Dalam epoch down to EU membership. Archivist-librarian Mark-Anthony Poulton looks at Gozo’s history through loose stamps and GPS covers, with possibly unusual choices. He quite naturally picked Ġgantija for the Temples period, Ċittadella for the Bronze Age and the famous Xlendi shipwreck for the Phoenician era. As Medieval examples he chose a tomb slab, the Cathedral, St George’s and Mġarr.

Historian Giovanni Pietro Francesco Agius De Soldanis and archpriest Saverio Cassar represent the period of the Knights of Malta, while the British period offers a wide range, including the 1814 plague and public transport.

Various personalities born under the British rule are also featured in the exhibition. These include Emmanuel Magri SJ, Ġorġ Pisani, Ġużè Aquilina, former president Anton Buttigieg, President Myriam Spiteri Debono and Cardinal Mario Grech.

The exhibition is open between 8.30am and 8pm until December 8. Entrance is free.
