We all enjoyed the beautiful photo of the big waves at Marsalforn, taken by Andrew Formosa and published on timesofmalta.com on January 26. Such a sight was possible because the pier/breakwater has been demolished by storms. And the photo above shows damage done by the recent storms to the pier at Ħondoq Ir-Rummien.

The sea undermined both of these piers and removed the seabed from under them causing them to collapse. This destruction could have been prevented with a few well placed boulders along the base of the piers. This would have cost so little and would have prevented the storm erosion.

The lovely little pier at Xwieni Bay has also been undermined by the sea and will collapse one of these days. One could virtually swim under the pier in Marsalforn with a tank on one's back before it collapsed. Is there a government body peopled by engineers responsible for these piers? Probably so, but with no budget or political will to carry out preventative maintenance, I guess.
