Gozo College Secondary School landed the best project in the Europe Direct – Gozo/EkoSkola/Leaf Award Scheme. The project chosen by the school was campaigning for reusable masks and proper disposal of disposable masks.

The school was awarded €500 worth of materials for the students to decorate the school corridors with murals containing sustainability related messages, sponsored by Bank of Valletta.

The topics chosen from this year’s event included the farm to fork process involving various aspects in food production, food consumption and packaging, sustainable and healthy living during COVID 19 and the impact of climate change in our everyday lifes.

The other schools ‒ Gozo College Middle School, San Lawrenz Primary, Laura Vicuna Primary School, St Francis School, Kindergarten, Nadur and St Theresa Primary School, Kercem ‒ received €100 each sponsored by the Europe Direct Gozo Office. Each school will be using the funds to do more sustainability-related projects.

The awards event, organised by Europe Direct Gozo, in collaboration with Nature Trust – FEE Malta, was addressed by various personalities, including Gozo Business Chamber CEO Daniel Borg, who remembered the late Marlene Muscat, former Europe Direct manager, who passed away on November 22. She was the brains behind this event.

At the end of the event, EkoSkola teacher Marvic Refalo announced that the award scheme for 2022 was open for new school projects with the focus being on the EU Green Deal and the UN sustainable development goals.
