I refer to the article (August 20) to say I am glad to see a display of open mindedness in the commissioning of a graffiti artist to spray the walls of the Corinthia Hotel in the Czech Republic. Such opportunities give graffiti artists the chance to show their talent without being typically thought of as simply deviant.
In Malta, graffiti art is not shown any appreciation since it is mostly perceived as a vandalistic act. The absence of legal walls makes it hard for graffiti artists to practise graffiti. The danger of getting caught in itself upholds the image of graffiti as being destructive, by denying artists the opportunity to showcase more complex pieces.
I urge local councils and the Ministry of Arts and Culture to give us the opportunity to display our talent by establishing legal walls, proving that graffiti can be more than just mere scribbling on a wall.
