The fast-improving St Vincent de Paul Running Group recently held another activity which included a 2K Fun Run and a 5K, all under the auspices of the Malta Amateur Athletic Association and backed by sponsors C&F Building Contractors, HSBC and San Michel.
In all, 200 athletes participated in the fun run with ages ranging from four to 67 years. Many of Malta's top runners were among the 135 on the starting line for the major race which started from near the gates of the residence.
Three athletes - Gerald Grech (AS Libertas), Jonathan Balzan (St Patrick's) and Brian Magri (Pembroke) - were among the main contenders.
At the 4K point, Grech took the lead and kept his pace to win the race in 15:48, a personal best and the fastest time recorded on this route.
Balzan clocked 15:55, an improvement of 11 seconds on the time he clocked the previous year. Third place went to Magri (16:14). He was followed by Peter Azzopardi (AS Libertas), Mark Herrera (Athleta Pembroke) and Jason Martin (Zurrieq Wolves).
Carol Galea (Athleta Pembroke) won the ladies' race in 17:36, also a record time for the same route. Cecilia Fenech (Zurrieq Wolves) was second in 18:54, followed by Angela Sammut (St Patrick's) in 19:42. Fourth place went to Marisa Muscat (Zurrieq Wolves).
Cash prizes and vouchers were presented to the winners. Special prizes for the first male and female employee at the residence were won by Anthony Borg (Zurrieq Wolves) and Miriam Cassar (St Vincent De Paul Running Group). Noel Spiteri (Zurrieq Wolves) won the special prize for the first male in the Health Sector.
Prizes were presented by Dr Francis Agius, Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly. The 2004 St Vincent de Paul Running Group 5K will be held on October 2.
