A group of 11 Maltese unions said it got used to insults hurled by Chamber for Small and Medium Enterprises - GRTU, whose director ac-cused the unions of being separatists.

GRTU director-general Vince Farrugia has argued that the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development, which Forum Unions Maltin, or Forum, wanted to join, was not a forum for "separatists".

The unions said the litany of insults aimed at it by various GRTU officials seemed to be endless, just as had happened when the largest protest by workers over high utility tariffs was staged on March 1.

It added that Mr Farrugia had come up with the "sublime" idea of the General Workers' Union giving up one of its MCESD seats to let Forum in and also claiming Forum was an "adoptive partner" of the GWU.

Speaking on behalf of Forum, the president of the Malta Union of Teachers, John Bencini had said Mr Farrugia was adamantly against the proposal for the group of unions to have a seat on the MCESD and was the only person speaking against the move at a recent meeting.

Mr Farrugia categorically denied Mr Bencini's claims, adding that during the meeting mentioned, GRTU president Paul Abela had only said the GWU should give up one of its two seats to accommodate the Forum.
