Floating billboard plans have been scuppered by Transport Malta, and the Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprise, the GRTU, couldn't be happier.

The GRTU said the decision, which came following consultation and a hullabaloo on social media, "reflects the way government should operate through consultation".

The union is currently at loggerheads with the government over changes to (land-bound) billboard regulations, which it says were steamrolled through and unfairly affect legitimate business owners.

Talk of floating billboards surfaced a few days ago, but with the public seemingly united against the idea, authorities began backpedaling within 24 hours. The public has also raised concerns about the number of illegal billboards dotting Malta's streets.
