Guarding the bank

I wish to thank Joseph Borg for his interest in HSBC (Security At Bank, February 18). In line with HSBC Group policy, we do not support the deployment of armed security guards in normal bank branches as it can provoke confrontation and/or violence.

In line with HSBC Group policy, we do not support the deployment of armed security guards in normal bank branches as it can provoke confrontation and/or violence. This has been experienced both locally and abroad.

We have, however, implemented serious measures to improve the security and safety of our staff and customers. This is an overriding priority for us. These measures cannot be disclosed. Furthermore, the euro changeover was a unique event with large amounts of money across Malta and attracting robbers.

Business is back to normal and HSBC has now substantially reduced all cash holdings in HSBC to bare working levels which are very much below those when we held just Maltese liri.

We are also now moving to a debit-card environment with ATMs and EPOS machines, with much less cash at the bank.
