Gudja first in Division Three, Zejtun in play-offs

Gudja United, backed by the strong support of their fans, outclassed neighbours Ghaxaq to clinch the championship crown ahead of Gharghur.

Gudja made sure of the points in the opening half after going in for the break leading by four goals.

Chris Grech put Gudja ahead after 17 minutes when he headed home from a Leslie Burke corner. The latter doubled his team's lead in the 26th minute and seven minutes later Louis Falzon hit goal no.3.

Two minutes before the interval Burke scored a fourth goal for Gudja from a direct free-kick.

The second period was a drab affair with Gudja keeper Matthew Xerxen hardly ever called into action.

At the end of the match, Xerxen, the captain, was presented with the cup by Malta FA vice president Carmelo Bartolo.

Kirkop United 0
Zejtun Corinthians 2

This was a crucial victory for Zejtun who lowered Kirkop United's colours to book a place in the promotion play-offs along with Sta Lucija and Birzebbuga.

Zejtun made all the early running but Kirkop were unlucky when a lob by Aldo Pace almost deceived Fardell who saved with the aid of the crossbar. However, on ten minutes Ûejtun took the lead and never looked back. Marco Gerada took a free-kick and Jesmar Abela was on the right spot to head past Mizzi.

After the break, Kirkop played much better but the best chances fell to Zejtun only to find Mizzi in their way.

Seven minutes from time Vince Camilleri sealed the issue for the Corinthians following a swift raid on the Kirkop fort.

Mgarr United 3

Mgarr substitute Andre Cauchi scored late in the match to avoid defeat for his side in their very last outing of the season.

Zurrieq took just four minutes to open the score thanks to Alexi Tonna but Mgarr's Neil Busuttil drew the teams level in the 25th minute.

However, Zurrieq's Dino Bonnici gave his team a 2-1 half-time lead and in the 64th minute Daniel Zammit made it 3-1.

But, Mgarr reacted strongly and nine minutes from time Matthew Gauci pulled one back.

In stoppage time Cauchi beat goalkeeper Galea to clinch a point for his side.

Luqa St Andrews 2
Ta' Xbiex 1

Ta' Xbiex fielded only ten players for this match but still made it difficult for their opponents to secure the points.

Keith Portelli gave Luqa a seventh-minute lead and pounded the seasiders' goal for the rest of the half.

Ta' Xbiex held tight and surprised Luqa with a 58th-minute equaliser by Liam Vidal. Luqa soon regained composure and after a couple of missed chances Charlo Debattista hit home from a quick Clive Psaila free-kick.

Siggiewi 1
Kalkara 0

A goal scored by Calvin Vassallo was enough for Siggiewi to beat Kalkara who played second best for most of this match.

Siggiewi showed their intentions from the word go as they pounded the Kalkara goal right from the kick-off.

Kalkara keeper Caruana was called into action on various occasions but there was little he could have done on 73 minutes when Vassallo broke the deadlock for Siggiewi for the match winner.

Xghajra Tornadoes 2
Sirens 1

This was a deserved victory for Xghajra over Sirens. They dictated the run of play for most of the match and took the lead in the 19th minute through a Damien D'Amato volley.

Sirens showed better play after the break but in the 59th minute D'Amato doubled the Greens' lead.

In a frantic last few minutes Maurice Busuttil pulled one back for Sirens who tried in vain to save the match.
