A Libyan man was yesterday given a two-year jail term suspended for four years and fined Lm1,200 for robbing a woman of her bag and damaging a car a year ago.

Hamza Eltroug, 27, admitted to stealing Maria Cassar's bag, damaging Kevin Vella's car, speeding and driving without a licence or insurance cover on January 2, 2004. On handing down judgment, Magistrate Saviour Demicoli noted that Eltroug had filed a guilty plea, had a clean criminal record and paid for the damage caused.

Eltroug was banned from driving for a year.

Police Inspector Mario Tonna prosecuted.
