The general secretary of the General Workers' Union, Tony Zarb, has sued Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi claiming that comments he passed during a meeting of the Nationalist Party's Women's Movement were libellous and defamatory.

In the suit, filed in the Magistrates' Court, Mr Zarb referred to Dr Gonzi's speech during the meeting on December 6 in which he said Mr Zarb had shut Sea Malta down resulting in the loss of 144 jobs.

This, Mr Zarb said, was libellous and defamatory and held Dr Gonzi liable in damages.

Lawyer Aron Mifsud Bonnici signed the writ.
