A designate replacement for General Workers’ Union boss Tony Zarb will probably be chosen earlier than expected, Times of Malta has learnt.

Union delegates were expected to choose Mr Zarb’s eventual successor in October next year but the resignation of his deputy, Michael Parnis, may prompt the organisation to bring forward that election.

Section secretary Andrew Mizzi said when contacted that he was interested in contesting the post of designate general secretary but Mr Parnis’s departure created a dilemma.

“I am still evaluating whether to contest the deputy role because I want to contest the post of general secretary designate in October. I have taken no decision yet but there is also the possibility of bringing forward the election for designate given recent developments,” Mr Mizzi said.

The union has to ponder whether it should hold one election at the start of the year – to fill Mr Parnis’s vacant post and choose the designate general secretary – instead of two separate contests.
