The General Workers Union yesterday met the management of Sterling Security Company to discuss the duties of local wardens at Zejtun and Ghaxaq.
In a statement, the union said the company explained the work of its warden employees and some problems were straightened out.
The union said it had never received any complaints concerning the imposition of ticket quotas on wardens in these two localities. In this particular case, the GWU said, it was satisfied that the wardens could perform their duties tranquilly.
The issue of quotas was raised by the GWU some days ago and at a meeting with local government Minister Austin Gatt it gave details of who it claimed was imposing them.
According to the union, these include an official acting in the name of the Fgura, Cospicua, Senglea, Vittoriosa, Kalkara and Zabbar councils; and an official acting in the name of the councils of Hamrun, Pieta' and Msida.
The ministry later said that an official acting in the interest of the Zejtun council had instructed wardens to issue contraventions to those who had temporary permits from the Ghaxaq council to use public land in Bir id-Deheb. It said the GWU claimed that this was the result of a dispute between the localities over their boundaries.
