GWU tells driving examiners to reduce their schedule as dispute flares
Union says issue over representation remains unresolved despite DIER intervention
The GWU has instructed Transport Malta driving examiners to reduce their daily exam schedule.
In a statement announcing the industrial action on Wednesday, the General Workers’ Union said it ordered the move after “several attempts” to resolve pending issues through dialogue, and with the intervention of the Department of Industrial and Employment Relations, had failed.
The dispute concerns union representation rights and is not related to financial claims or working conditions.
Transport Malta confirmed that the union had ordered driving examiners to reduce their daily exam schedule.
Jurgen Azzopardi, who presides over the GWU’s Maritime and Aviation Section, said that while the union remained committed to a fair solution, it could not allow members’ rights to be ignored.
“These actions follow a previous phase of negotiations that did not lead to a concrete solution, and therefore, the GWU had no other option but to order industrial actions for its members,” the union said in a statement.
“The GWU acknowledges that these industrial actions may affect some services and apologises for the inconvenience, but says it is a necessary step to look after its members and protect their rights under labour law.”
