In an ironic twist, as General Workers' Union supporters were yesterday protesting in Valletta about the right to work, the union's EU desk officer found himself without a job.

Peter Paul Barbara was informed that his job was being terminated by the union. Mr Barbara, a part timer, was informed his services were no longer required as the post has been abolished.

Mr Barbara was one of the authors of reports about the implications of EU membership. His report had concluded that EU membership would be beneficial for Malta and was never released by the union.

Sources said the issue had been brewing for the past three weeks. Mr Barbara went to collect his pay cheque but found none. He protested and was subsequently paid, only to be informed in writing on Monday that his job had been terminated.
