The General Workers' Union has written to the European Economic and Social Committee to inform them of the comment made by Investment and IT Minister Austin Gatt with regard to the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD).

Dr Gatt had described the MCESD as a talking shop.

The GWU said that in its letter it noted that the minister's comment did not only undermine social dialogue in the country but indicated that the government did not have confidence in social partnership.

The union asked the European committee to intervene to safeguard the integrity and importance of the MCESD.

The committee is a non-political body that is consulted by the European Parliament.
