GWU 'saves' jobs at Vittoriosa casino

Timely intervention by the General Workers' Union saved the jobs of workers at the Casino di Venezia, which was about to be sold after it encountered financial difficulties, the union said yesterday.

It said it expressed its concern to the chairman of Vittoriosa Gaming Ltd, Armando Favaretto, over the "malpractices" of one individual in a top position, which led to the situation at the casino.

In fact, the GWU added, Prof. Favaretto sent a delegation of company directors to verify the union's complaints.

The union said eventually it resulted that the complaints were justified and Prof. Favaretto confirmed to the union that not only would the company not discharge any workers but that the board of directors could increase investment in Malta in the near future.

"We spoke to them about the prospects of the area, the fact that the cruise liner business promises more patrons and so on, and they have agreed to stay and look for a new partner," GWU hospitality and food section secretary Josef Bugeja said.
