The General Workers’ Union said today that Enemalta's report on the Good Friday power cut could not be taken seriously because it was prepared by people with a possible conflict of interest.

The union also deplored how Enemalta’s management tried to blame the outage on its industrial action when the directives did not apply to the engineers.

The GWU said it would not allow anyone to cast doubts and suspicions on the workers who were obeying its directives. The management could not hide the corporation’s inefficiencies in this way.

The power cut, it said, reflected a lack of investment which had already been highlighted as long ago as 2006.

The union said it was not accepting undemocratic tactics to undermine the workers’ right to industrial action.

The Enemalta board which reported to Finance Minister Tonio Fenech yesterday, made a number of recommendations, including a call for industrial action affecting the generation sections to be banned.

The union thanked the workers for working tirelessly, sometimes putting themselves in danger, for the electricity provision to return to normal in the shortest possible time. It promised to continue protecting their interests.
