Ħamrun council and a youth charity are collecting money for the family of 54-year-old mother-of-two Miriam Pace who was killed when her home collapsed on Monday. 

The organisations announced they had set up bank accounts to help raise money in a move endorsed by the family.

Catholic youth charity ĊAMYouths is collecting donations via text, Revolut and bank transfers.

The victim's daughter Ivana Maria and her husband are members of the organisation. 

Ħamrun mayor Christian Sammut said that a separate BOV bank account was set up after the victim's husband, Carmel, had given the council permission to proceed.

Sammut said the money collected will be used by the family for legal assistance and to rebuild their life since they had “lost everything”. 

“Your donations are very important to help those who have ended up with nothing during this difficult time,” the mayor said. 

The tragedy has sparked anger and outrage. Some have blamed the authorities for what they say is lack of enforcement while others have criticised the developers behind the project. A magisterial enquiry is ongoing.

'People who care for others'

Friends of the Pace family have been expressing their sadness and anger over the construction collapse.

Nationalist MP Claudio Grech, said he had known the victim and her husband Carmel for a long time and that they were particularly active within the Church through the Tal-Karmnu community in Valletta.

"They are upstanding, hard-working and conscientious people who care about others with a very strong sense of civic responsibility, making all this an even bigger social injustice which triggers pain, anger and a sense of helplessness," he said.

"The anger grows when one sees that this was completely avoidable but, dismally, is a stark reflection of the throwaway culture that is ingraining itself in our society."
