Police said yesterday they had identified a woman whose head was found in a bag in Scotland.

Lothian and Borders Police said DNA tests showed the woman was 44-year-old Heather Stacey, who came from Edinburgh.

Detectives have arrested and charged a 54-year-old man over the discovery of the remains. He appeared for a hearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday afternoon.A dog walker found the head and other bones in a blue IKEA shopping bag on a footpath in Edinburgh on New Year's Eve.

Police said they believed the woman died within the last two years, and tests were continuing to establish the exact circumstances of her death.

They appealed for anyone who knew of Ms Stacey to contact them.
