Health authorities warn about unauthorised weight loss medication
Retatrutide is being sold online or through social media
The health authorities on Friday issued a warning about an unauthorised weight loss medication that is being sold through online platforms and social media.
The Superintendence of Public Health and the Malta Medicines Authority said in a statement that products claiming to contain Retatrutide are being sold through unverified and unauthorised sources.
Retatrutide is not authorised for public use, and no product containing this substance has been approved for use. These products are often promoted for weight loss or other health-related benefits but are unregulated and may be falsified, counterfeit, improperly stored, or of unknown origin and quality, the authorities said.
They urged people to:
- Purchase medicines only from licensed pharmacies
- Avoid products that do not carry clear labelling, ingredient information, or proper authorisation
- Exercise caution with products promoted through unofficial online channels or social media
- Avoid any substances marketed as “research”, “experimental”, or “not for human consumption”
- Always seek professional advice from a licensed healthcare professional before using any medicine or health-related product, regardless of how it is advertised
They warned that the use of unauthorised or unregulated products may pose serious risks, including adverse health effects, allergic reactions, contamination, toxicity, infections, and other potentially harmful consequences.
Healthcare professionals, retailers, and the public are being encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspected unsafe, falsified, or illegal products through the appropriate reporting channels.
