Not only is the plot of land right at the end of Bwieraq Street, Birkirkara, near the old windmill, an eyesore, it is also a health hazard. The site is full of rat-infested black murky water and is regularly used as a rubbish dump.
Residents have made numerous complaints, both to the local council and the Health Division. Although the latter did send some men over to inspect the area and to throw poisoned pellets to kill the rats, these merely dissolved in the water and did nothing to diminish the rat population.
The putrid smell as well as infected mosquitoes are a constant threat, especially to our children. Lately the situation has worsened to such an extent that we are reluctant to put out our garbage bags for fear of coming face to face with the rodents.
I call on the local council and the Health Division to take immediate action unless they want some seriously ill children and adults to contend with. Are we waiting for a tragedy to occur to put things right?
