Health warning issued for 11 different baby formulas

Formulas recalled due to toxin fears

Health authorities have issued warnings about 11 different infant formulas, with parents warned to check batches they have for potential contamination.

The recalls and warnings impact various batches of formula manufactured by Cow & Gate, Aptamil and Bebelac.

All the impacted batches may contain a toxin called cereulide that can cause food poisoning symptoms such as vomiting, nausea and stomach cramps. Cereulide is highly heat stable, meaning it can survive being in boiling water.

"Consumers are advised not to consume the implicated products and either dispose of it or return it to the store from which it was purchased," health authorities said.

Other major manufacturers of infant formula, including Nestle and Danone, have also issued a raft of recalls across Europe in the past weeks on cereulide fears. France has since announced plans to tighten its infant formula rules.

In Malta, a health warning was previously issued for batches of Nestle SMA brand formula while importers had previously assured that batches of Aptamil recalled in France and the UK were not in Malta. Aptamil however figured prominently in Saturday's recall.
