The aim of SkolaSport Sajf, organised by Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport (KMS) and sponsored by Kellogg's, is not only to offer children the opportunity to keep active during the summer months, but also to encourage them to discover and practise new sports.
During a visit to the Vikings Sailing Club, Jesmond Mug-liett, Minister for Youth and the Arts, said he was pleased to note that sailing, as part of Skolasport Sajf, is becoming ever more popular with local youngsters.
"These classes are the basis on which Malta's recent international success in this sport is founded," he said. "This year we have seen an increase in female participation as well. This shows the extent to which these programmes appeal to all."
Sailing instructors Charles Vella and John Sammut said that they were quite pleased with the number of participants at the Vikings Sailing Club this summer.
"Participants total about 70, and what's even more heartening to us is that the children are encouraging their parents to take up this sport as well. This is a positive step forward. In this way one can generate a healthier lifestyle within the family itself via sailing," they said.
Joe Cassar, KMS designate chief executive, said the number of children taking part in SkolaSport Sajf is very encouraging.
"We are not going to stop here. The KMS is examining all feedback received from various coaches and participants so as to further improve next summer's edition," he said.
Skolasport Sajf sessions are held throughout the summer and run till the end of September.
Sailing is once again being held at the Vikings Sailing Club and also at the Birzebbuga Sailing Club which is catering for children aged between seven and 16 under the guidance of George Bonnici.
Meanwhile, the swimming programme, conducted by the Swimming Promotion Unit, is aimed for beginners between the ages of five and 10 years. Sessions are taking place at the National Pool and the Sirens Aquatic Sports Club in St Paul's Bay.
The Basic Skills concept was introduced for the first time since SkolaSport Sajf activities were created. The KMS is satisfied with the number of youngsters taking up this activity, which is resulting in a success.
Basic Skills sessions are conducted by Erica Xerri Mallon on Wednesdays at the Cottonera Sports Complex.
