Mundiavocat celebrations at Casinò di Venezia
The 11th Mundiavocat, which saw over 1,000 lawyers from 21 nations participating in the Advocates' World Cup, came to a boisterous end last Friday week at the Casinò di Venezia in Vittoriosa.
With such a massive turnout of guests, the celebrations spilled over on to the quay just outside the casinò.
The Mundiavocat celebrations were also attended by guests of honour, Dr Goerge Hyzler, Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Services, whose personal initiative in the past years was instrumental in ensuring Malta's participation in this tournament, and Mr Jesmond Mugliett, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education.
The imposing façade of the Casinò di Venezia together with the serene views of the Grand Harbour and Valletta proved to be an ideal setting for this celebration.
A lavish, mouth-watering buffet dinner served at the water's edge helped to make the event a truly memorable occasion for the distinguished local and foreign guests.

Young Maltese graduate wins Prince's Trust National Media Award
An event held at Battersea Park, London, earlier this month did not attract any attention in Malta, but for one Maltese young lady, it was very significant. One could say it was her day.
Nicole Cuschieri, 23, of St Paul's Bay, not only graduated from Westminster University after concluding a three-year course in fashion, collecting a BA (Hons) London Fashion degree, but was also surprised to be announced winner of the prestigious Prince's Trust National Media Award.
Her collection for the catwalk, held during the Prince's Trust Graduate Fashion Week, sponsored by Top- shop, which opened on June 10, was entirely original, with plastic-made inflatable garments, box-shaped gloves with hinges as buttons, and a video display directed by Nicole herself as background.
Julia Robson, commenting in The Daily Telegraph, said that only 20 per cent of students got the opportunity to show their clothes on the catwalk and added that "as well as enjoying their 60 seconds of catwalk fame, these lucky few also collectively become a college brand to entice the new class of 2003."
Nicole said she would like to pursue her studies further and try to get a rant so she could go for a Master's degree before she settles down to work: "In this field you need all the experience you could get if you want to achieve excellent results. And I would like to do just that".
Golden Jubilee and Queen's Birthday celebration
For British High Commissioner Howard Pearce, the annual reception marking the Queen's Official Birthday, which he hosted at Villa Degiorgio, his residence in San Pawl tat-Targa, yesterday week, took on a special significance this year.
To begin with, it also coincided with the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty's reign and thus was a double celebration, but it was also a kind of farewell for Mr Pearce, who will be leaving Malta in a couple of months to take up his new appointment as Governor of the Falkland Islands.
About 1,000 guests filled the large lawn at Villa Degiorgio, while the Peace Band of Naxxar played popular tunes as the guests were welcomed by Mr Pearce, his deputy, Mr Philip Tissot, who will also be leaving Malta shortly, and other High Commission officials.
Those who turned up for this double royal celebration, who were led by the President of Malta, Professor Guido de Marco, included Cabinet ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, members of the Judiciary, MPs, members of the business community and of constituted bodies, British residents, members of the media and friends of Mr Pearce.
In what has become a tradition with British High Commissioners, Mr Pearce delivered a good part of his speech in fairly accurate and colloquial Maltese, to the delight of all present.
He began by saying that this year is one of important anniversaries: the 60th anniversary of the award of the George Cross to Malta, with the Princess Royal participating in the celebrations last April; and in August/September the 60th anniversary of the Santa Marija convoy, when veterans of that great feat will be honoured for relieving the starving, beleaguered island.
Mr Pearce naturally referred to the 50 years of Queen Elizabeth on the throne and to the "significant ceremony" held in Malta, where Her Majesty lived for a time, to commemorate the Golden Jubilee. He was pleased to see so many guests turn up for the celebration of the jubilee and of the Official Birthday.
It was also time to say goodbye, he said, and this would be the last time he would be giving a speech in Maltese... Nahseb li lkoll tghidu 'ghall-erwieh' (I'm sure you'll all say 'Thank God') he said with self-deprecating humour.
Turning to English, Mr Pearce said this was an extremely significant period in Malta's history and he regretted not being here when the decisions on the island's future, and on its relations with Europe, will be taken next year. These decisions, to be freely taken by the people of Malta, will be the most important since independence in 1964.
The High Commissioner expressed his appreciation for the warmth and hospitality of the Maltese, a reputation which was well deserved. He thanked Professor de Marco in particular for his "wise guidance and warm friendship" and then proposed a toast to the President.
In reply President de Marco recalled his audience with Queen Elizabeth last year, when Her Majesty told him that Malta was the only place outside Britain which she could call home. "Her Majesty was, and is, always welcome here", he said.
Fifty years ago, when Queen Elizabeth ascended the throne, Malta was a colony; it became independent in 1964 with the Queen as Queen of Malta, and a republic in 1974, while recognising the Queen as Head of the Commonwealth.
These 50 years were years of great changes in Malta's political relationship with Britain, but the warm relations and affection between the two peoples have remained unchanged, despite the vicissitudes of history. Today the two countries had a particularly friendly relationship, both equal in status, both sovereign and together looking towards Europe, with the UK joining the EU in 1973.
President de Marco also referred to the 60th anniversary of the award of the George Cross, which solidified the relationship between the two countries. "Never were relations between them so close as during the war," he said, recalling the epic Santa Marija convoy.
The validity of those links also applied to the future, within a different context of events, changes for which the Maltese people are preparing themselves.
Concluding his address in Maltese, President de Marco told Mr Pearce that his stay here had brought him close to the Maltese language but also to the Maltese people, who lived in an island but were not isolated.
He thanked Mr Pearce for his performance as High Commissioner, "not only as a diplomat but also as a man of letters and a lover of music". He then proposed a toast to the Queen, head of the Commonwealth.
The Peace Band then played Lil din l-Art Helwa and God Save the Queen.
Strawberries and champagne galore at Ras Rihana
Lions Club Mdina has kept its annual appointment with the season's favourite fruit, strawberries.
What has become popularly known as a strawberry and champagne morning was this year held in the enchanting gardens of Ras Rihana, kindly made available by Chev. Maurice Mizzi. The event began with Mass offered for the needs of mothers present and those in a better world.
A very enjoyable and informative demonstration was given by Michael Cauchi, chef patron of Il Re del Pesce, at Marsascala, who generously offered his services gratuitously for this fund-raising activity.
Lions and their guests later enjoyed savouring all the delicacies that were offered, ably prepared by James Confectionery, while admiring the many colourful rare and not so rare flowers blooming at Ras Rihana, all ladies present agreed to meet again next year for a repeat of the happy experience.
