Edwardian reunion
The beautifully simple medieval chapel of St Edward the Confessor was the venue for the first part of the grand reunion of all Old Edwardians and partners held recently at the college.
During a brief but moving ceremony, led by Mgr Mifsud Montanaro, prayers were offered for all Edwardians. The names of those deceased were read out solemnly by four headmasters in succession - Mr Antoine Cachia Caruana, Mr Gerald Briscoe, Mr Anthony J. Saliba (headmaster designate), and finally Mr William Dimech, outgoing headmaster, who read the names of those who had passed away in the last two years.
On the altar, meanwhile, lay the Book of Remembrance, in which the names of all deceased Old Edwardians are entered so that they can be remembered each year on the anniversary of their death.
The mood changed soon afterwards, when drinks, jokes and stories began to flow among the 600/700 people present. The front garden was prettily decorated for the occasion with white lights, which showed off the colourful flower beds to great effect, and Edwardians of all ages mixed indiscriminately to share reminiscences of their youth.
Time seems to telescope to nothing at these occasions, and the three Foundation Pupils who were present enjoyed sharing their common heritage with pupils of the third generation of Edwardians. Several members of staff, past and present, were there to give their perspective on history, too, and the four bars, kindly set up by the management of the Hotel Metropole, were kept busy all evening.
Several of those present made their contribution there and then to the headmaster's Sponsored Round Malta Bike Ride to raise funds for the repair of the boundary wall of the college, and several others promised to send their cheques "later".
To date there have been only 100 contributors, out of a possible 4,000 or so, but two of them have donated Lm100 and several others £100, far exceeding Mr Dimech's modest target of Lm1 per person.
Mr Dimech personally thanked all those who had given so generously and reminded others that cheques should be made payable to St Edward's and clearly marked "Sponsorship for the Boundary Wall".
Contributions from present pupils and parents will be presented to the headmaster at his farewell Whole School Assembly on Tuesday.

Professor Mark Brincat made Chevalier of the Legion of Honour
Last month, the French Ambassador, M. Didier Destremau, on behalf of President Jacques Chirac, conferred the insignia of Chevalier in the Legion d'Honneur on Professor Mark Brincat.
At a reception held at Villa Arrigo, San Pawl Tat-Targa, suitably bedecked with the French tricolor, the Ambassador said the award was being made in recognition of Professor Brincat's long association with French companies while carrying out research in reproductive medicine and hormone replacement and its substitutes.
Professor Brincat, head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, also brought his department and the Medical School closer to French medicine and is currently collaborating in Pan-European studies where French centres are heavily involved.
In his reply, Professor Brincat thanked the Ambassador and the President for the honour he be-stowed upon him. He then touched on the various research projects that he had been involved in and pointed out that his Ph.D. work, carried out at King's College Hospital in London, was sponsored by a French company, Besins Iscovesco, which is currently, among others, represented in work in Malta.
He is also involved with a French company called IBA that is looking into the exciting properties of a seaweed derived molecule, which has promise as a substitute to conventional hormone replacement.
As regards the Medical School, Professor Brincat reminded the guests that this was founded by the Order of St John and was always entrusted to the French langue.
It is therefore pertinent that the Medical School, as it has always done, is moving with the times and diversifying its base. It is strengthening the links with strong French universities such as has been achieved in a recent agreement with the University of Montpellier.
Attending the reception were other Legion d'Honneur holders in Malta, including former Chief Justice Professor J.J. Cremona, senior members of the medical profession, close family members and friends.
Russian National Day reception
The President, Professor Guido de Marco, the Prime Minister, Dr Fenech Adami, and other distinguished guests - among them Cabinet ministers, MPs, the Apostolic Nuncio, Mgr Luigi Conti, and members of the diplomatic corps, Auxiliary Bishop Annetto Depasquale, former Presidents Censu Tabone and Ugo Mifsud Bonnici and their wives - attended the annual reception hosted by the Ambassador of the Russian Federation and Mrs Zotova at the Embassy in San Gwann last Wednesday to commemorate Russia's National Day.
In his speech, Ambassador Zotov said that since the Declaration on State Sovereignty of Russia, adopted by the Russian Parliament on June 12, 1990, his country had made tremendous progress in the development of a genuine democracy and important reforms in the economy, and in the social and other spheres of life.
"With full determination we are moving along the road of establishing strategic partnerships with the major states and institutions and enhancing an equitable and effective co-operation in the areas of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, peacekeeping and socio-economic integration, in the joint struggle against terrorism and other common challenges and threats humankind is facing in the 21st century", Dr Zotov said.
"Today's Russia is a great power, which is actively promoting the concept of forming a multi-polar order in international relations and which is fully aware of its special responsibility for the destiny of peace in the world and is earnestly fulfilling all its foreign policy obligations."
Noting that the Russian diplomatic service is celebrating its bicentenary this year, Ambassador Zotov added that this year also marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between his country and Malta, although Russo-Maltese ties go back at least three centuries.
"My country highly appreciates the close and traditionally friendly character of its relationship with the neutral, prosperous Malta, which plays a tangible constructive role in the international arena, including European affairs, and generates major initiatives for the Mediterranean," Dr Zotov continued, recalling President Putin's message to President de Marco that "Russia is prepared to be most actively involved in the mechanisms of multilateral co-operation functioning in the Mediterranean. We intend to continue to closely interact with Malta in settling the topical issues in the regional and world politics."
The Ambassador noted that on many vital issues, including the problems of peace and security, equality and legal order in international relations, the ways of solving regional conflicts and so forth, the positions of Russia and Malta coincide or are very close. "This provides a solid guarantee for the further strengthening of interaction between our two countries within the UN and other international, primarily European, organisations.
"We intend to continue developing mutually beneficial trade and economic and investment partnership with Malta, to further enhance bilateral exchanges in the areas of tourism, culture and art as well as to strengthen our joint efforts towards establishing inter-confessional dialogue and co-operation in safeguarding our common Christian values."
Mr Zotov said that at the international symposium held in Malta last year on the historical destiny of the miraculous Icon of Our Lady of Philermos, he proposed that a new international role of Malta should be established - that of a major ecumenical centre and a venue for a regular dialogue between the Orthodox and the Catholic Churches.
"This idea is supported both in Moscow and the Holy See," he said. "Russia believes that, at the present complicated time, when many people tend to talk about a clash of civilisations, Malta could as well play a specific role in fostering a dialogue between the Christian and Islamic worlds."
He was sure that the consolidation of Russo-Maltese relations, which he defined as "excellent", would serve to contribute to international peace and stability.
Ambassador Zotov ended by proposing a toast "to the further development of Russo-Maltese relations, to the further progress and prosperity of Malta, to the happiness and well-being of its people; to President de Marco, and to peace and tranquillity, stability and progress throughout the world".
In his reply, President de Marco said that this important anniversary, marked by Russia's National Day, represents an awakening of the democratic world which goes beyond the dimensions of the Russian Federation. Russia today is a strong believer in democracy and the social market economy.
He paid tribute to the Russian people - "a great people with a great history and a great future" - with whom it was fundamental to work together for peace in the world. Some spoke of the end of history and the clash of civilisations. There was no end of history, while the future must not be dominated or burdened by a clash of civilisations.
While clashes between religions were a very bad service to humanity, complacency was even worse. Clashes, President de Marco said, are stopped by positive action.
Malta was very much involved in such action, as a bridge in the centre of the Mediterranean, providing understanding, and a balanced approach to issues, a certain style in diplomacy. Malta's role was that of an interface between religions - Catholic and Orthodox, Christian and Islamic.
National Days are not out of fashion, as some believe, for they serve to remind us of important historical events. President de Marco referred to the recent epoch-making agreement between Russia and NATO and the setting up of a special Council between them - an important achievement for world peace and stability.
President de Marco then proposed a toast to President Putin, to the prosperity of the Russian people, and to the continuing strength of Russo-Maltese relations.
The toasts were followed by the playing of the two national anthems.
Guests could also admire a photographic exhibition dedicated to the Order of Malta's presence in Russia.

The 2002 Summer Tempra Academy will be hosted in Greece from July 15-31 at the privately-owned island of Aghia Trias by its vice-president, Lilika Papanicolaou, the Greek poet, historian and famous "lady pioneer in Space Art".
The Tempra Academy is directed by its president, Dame Françoise Tempra, who has just visited Greece to make the final arrangements for this event which is closely linked to the Malta International Art Biennale.
The Tempra Academy promotes the interaction of creativity and artistic stimulation in congenial surroundings, and thus for writers, composers, painters, sculptors, ceramists, designers, architects, photographers, film makers, digital artists, choreographers, craftsmen and even simply art lovers.
The daily agenda will include mornings spent creating or swimming in the clear sea around Aghia Trias island and then commenting the endeavours or achievements, at lunch, the first social encounter of the day.
In the afternoon ,a lecture will be delivered and its subject will be the source of interesting and healthy dinner-debates under the canopied verdant luxuriance of Aghia Trias gardens.
Distinguished lecturers are attending. In the first week Professor Felix Meier (Switzerland), director of the Mediterranean Academy for Diplomatic Studies at the University of Malta and a brilliant linguist, will offer lectures on "Art and the Art of Diplomacy".
In the second week Dr Peter Muscat, a psychiatrist who also lectures at the University of Malta, will lecture on "The Four Seasons of Emotion". The third week Dr lrene Rousseau (USA), artist, author and lecturer and former president of the American Abstract Artists (an association created in 1936 which included such distinguished members as Fernand Leger, Piet Mondrian and Josef Albers), will deliver two lectures on "Mosaic Art: from Mythology to Micro-chip" and "Genesis: Australia's Aboriginal People and their Art".
A sculpture workshop will be led by Paul Haber, the Gozo-based sculptor who won first prize for Ceramics at the Malta Inernational Art Biennale last year.
The Summer Tempra Academy in Greece will be officially opened in Aghia Trias on July 16 by the Maltese Ambassador to Greece, Evarist Saliba, who visited the island last month.

XUEREB - LEO. Happy Father's Day.
Give him a hug, a great big kiss
Because one day, he will be greatly missed.
My daddy has gone far away from this land,
I miss the precious touch of his loving hands.
I never knew last year was the last time,
I could look at my daddy, hug him, and say:
"I love you, Daddy! Happy Father's Day!"
All I have now is great memories,
A heart full of love and eyes full of tears
And to remember his love throughout the years.
Now I will have to look up at the stars and say,
"I love you, Daddy! Happy Father's Day!"
Ingrid.
