Alain Blondy`s new book L`Ordre de Malte au XVIIIeme siecle, published by Bouchene, was launched at the Embassy of Malta in Paris earlier this month.
Professor Blondy gave a learned but amusing presentation of his book to a very distinguished audience of the crème de la crème of the Order of Malta in France, with many noble descendants of French knights present. The Ambassador, Professor Salvino Busuttil, who wrote the preface to the book, introduced the author.
The audience included Mme Marie-Amelie Dewavrin, president of the Institute for Maltese Culture, which sponsored both the book and the reception, Countess Roberta d`Alberti, Viscount and Viscountess Marc de Boiboissel, Prince Dominic Gabrieli (president of the Cercle Litteraire), several professors from the Sorbonne University of Paris and Professor Jean Pavleski (director of Economica), Senator J. Legendre (president of the French-Maltese Friendship Group in the Senate), Senator L. Lanier, rapporteur for Malta in the Senate`s EU Delegation, the Ambassador of Cyprus, Ms Clarissa Formosa Gauci of UNESCO, Mr Dominic Micallef, director, Malta Tourism Authority, Paris), Mr and Mrs Eric Psaila (director of Air Malta, Paris), Princess Tall, Prince and Princess Mouroussi.
The Knights of Malta, led by Bailli Pierredon and Count Mortemart, included Count and Countess Gonzague de Saint-Seine, Count de Verdalle, Count and Countess de Villario, Mr J. de Vilmorin, Ms Christine Fain (Director of Torrente, the fashion house), Mother Schembri, Superior General of the Sisters of St Joseph and Mr and Mrs Simon Pullicino of the Malta Embassy in Paris.
A number of literary critics and historians also attended the gathering.
Birthdays celebrated at Villa Tempra
As usual, the Villa Tempra buffet dinner which followed the Giacomo de Pass exhibition opening at the Mediterranean Conference Centre on April 1, proved again a celebration of the artist and his wife and also to all the Malta International Art Biennale delegates.
In fact, the welcoming celebration included two birthdays - Lucienne Amiel, who was born on that very day and just arrived from Bordeaux with her husband Lucien (delegate for the Malta Biennale for Morocco and organising a Malta Biennale event in Casablanca later this year) and Eva Kover (born on March 30).
The unavoidable Villa Tempra birthday cake proclaimed "Welcome to Villa Tempra, Giacomo, Valerie, Traudl and Dominique and happy birthday Eva and Lucienne" (Traudl von Koenig and Dominique Gary being the publishers of Giacomo de Pass` monographs, lithographs and giant bronzes).
The evening progressed in a typical Villa Tempra manner. After accompanying on the piano the exuberant singing of happy birthdays, Baron Joseph Drago Testaferrata d`Aragona gave a mesmerising recital with flying fingers on the keyboard of his own compositions, followed by another composer`s peformance, Arnaud Galand (from RCA Productions, having arrived with producer Michel Claret for filming) and Marie Antoinette Borg, who accompanied all present in the favourite French songs which not only delight the guests from France but above all Fr Marius Zerafa, founder vice-president of the Malta Art Biennale.
Many decided to meet again and attend the awards gala dinner in Italy of the International Grolla d`Oro di Treviso art competition, on May 25, at Castel Brando (near Venice), the opening of the Malta Biennale Awards exhibition at the Bad Honnef town hall and the Katholische Landhochschule on July 11 (organised with the collaboration of the wife of former German Ambassador to Malta, Milena Kunz Bijno), and the Summer Tempra Academy at Lilika Papanicolaou`s private island in Greece, where one of the guests, Dr Peter Muscat, will lecture on July 23, 24 and 25.
Round Table Day celebrated
Last month, Round Table (Malta) 1 celebrated Round Table Day at the Radisson SAS Bay Point Resort. To mark this special occasion, the chairman, Peter Paul Bonnici, presented Lm1,500 to various charitable organisations.
Before the presentation, Mr Bonnici mentioned that Round Table (Malta) 1 was established 27 years ago and that over the years they have donated over Lm150,000 to charities.
Round Table has also assisted Din l-Art Helwa with the restoration of two watchtowers and St Agatha`s Chapel in Mdina. Last year Lm1,500 was donated towards the Mnajdra campaign.
This year, however, as opposed to donating a lump sum towards just one charity, Round Table (Malta) 1 decided to "share the wealth" among a number of charities in order to create a public awareness of the various organisations that require constant funding not only during the festive season but also throughout the year.
During the presentation, each recipient gave some very interesting information about their cause to all the guests. Receiving the donations were Terry Gosden (Dar Suret-il Bniedem); Christine Debono (Little Sisters of the Poor); Joan Selvagi (Prevention Care Group); Dr Elena Tanti Burlò (Equal Partners Foundation); Nathan Farrugia (Park of Friendship); Sr Maria Antida Mifsud (Dar tal-Providenza); Mark Vella (Angel Tree); Louisa Scerri (Fond Ghajri) and Luana Corradi (Kane Corradi).

A floral art demonstration was held recently at St Augustine parish hall in Valletta by Mariuccia, Nadine and Glorian Micallef-Grimaud, all three qualified demonstrators of the London and Overseas Association of NAFAS.
This is a yearly event for preparing their many students for the Great Spring Show of May 18 and 19, organised by the Horticultural Society, which has been going on for 100 years.
This is the 25th time for the students of the Micallef Grimauds participating in this great event. The three ladies were awarded, for the 10th time, the Daily Mail Perpetual Trophy - the most prestigious of the whole show, a show of artistry and professionalism. It is definitely not to be missed.
