The church dedicated to Our Lady of Pilar, in Valletta, which was used by the Franciscan nuns, has been officially handed over to Heritage Malta.

The church, built in 1670, underwent major restoration between 1989 and 1991 through the Valletta Rehabilitation Project. It was now being handed over to the agency responsible for several other cultural heritage sites in Malta with the aim of opening the church to the public.

During the handing-over ceremony on Thursday, Justice and Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg said the government has adopted a policy of devolution so that certain sites, especially those of cultural importance, are handed over to agencies and local councils. Over the past years, 31 public properties were handed over to 21 local councils.
