An original comedy scripted by Malcolm Galea has won this year's edition of the MADC One Act Plays Festival.

The clubrooms in Sta Venera hosted the six-play festival in which six budding directors and 35 aspiring actors and actresses vied for the top prizes.

The Play With The Silly Name written and directed by Mr Galea was the favourite production among the judges, beating stiff competition from One For The Road, directed by Adrian Buckle, and Blue Murder, directed by Sharon Spiteri.

The best actor award went to Jean Pierre Agius for his excellent rendition of the interrogator in Harold Pinter's One for the Road.

Maria Pia Meli won the top award for best actress in The Play With The Silly Name while Sharon Bezzina took the most promising actress award for the same play.

Nicholas Gauci's Sir Charles Popham in Blue Murder had the audience in fits of laughter, winning him the most promising actor award in the process.

This annual event, introduced in 1979, is now regarded as an important means of generating and encouraging fresh talent to support the club's established players.
