Minister Louis Deguara expressed concern on the unsustainability of the health sector. It was reported that Air Malta have suffered a Lm10 million loss. Maghtab has swollen out of proportion. Public transport has grown into an uncontrollable demon. The list is non-exhaustive. And all these problems happened... Just like magic - yesterday they were not and today they are here.
This political situation is what is truly unbearable. Accountability is close to nil. Why is it that politicians in power wait for problems to burst before any real action is taken? This nonchalant approach of the government is no more bearable than the opposition's silence, and however hard one tries to make the reality seem rosier it remains a crime. The government should be forced to respond to each act because people are becoming more disgusted at the government's lax attitude.
How long will we have to wait before real solutions to the devastating effects of pollution (waste, noise, light, air and water), of heavy traffic congestion, of relatively declining energy supply, of increasing unemployment and of declining tourism, are found? What is the price we are paying for these political deficiencies?
People work more to buy air conditioners to survive the delirious summer - blackouts take away this petty luxury too. People work more to be able to buy more or newer cars in order to arrive quicker at the cosy corner called home - many a time the soupy traffic brings back nervous wives and edgy husbands.
What about the kawlata of poisons our lungs inhale? Carcinogenic sulphur dioxide and benzene and asthmatic carbon particles, but forgive me, I must have left out a whole rainbow of these toxins. The quality of life is rock bottom.
Good God, make us all believe that all this occurred overnight. Lead us not into the temptation of thinking that what really happened was short-sighted policy-making born of vote catching strategies. And forgive us if we still have to give our trust to the same political parties time and time again!
