Following the publication of a short history of the children's programmes from their inception and eventually the promise of a similar article about the long and successful series of Christmas parties, which included the historic one held on HMS Ark Royal (this year being the 45th anniversary), I have been inundated by persons, both old and young, who want to learn more about this important aspect of Maltese history.

One of the calls brought to my attention the fact that November will mark the 70th anniversary when Rediffusion (the cable radio) had first started transmission in the Maltese islands.

I understand that it was on November 11, 1935 that broadcasting can be said to have begun in Malta. It needed many years for the service to expand but initially there used to be big loudspeakers in the town and village squares, mainly above the police stations.

Once again I appeal to the board of PBS, and perhaps the appropriate faculty at the university, to compile a special series in this regard. The most senior broadcaster who is still alive, namely Charles Arrigo, should be encouraged to coordinate and present this proposed series of programmes. There are ample material and photographs available.

In my opinion, this particular anniversary series should focus on personalities including those behind the scenes. Any reference to politics should be left to the barest minimum. The stress ought to be on the entertainment value, when the only respite from work was the small wooden box that used to keep all the family engrossed for many an hour.

There are a few of the pioneers still alive. Let us compile such a series before it will be too late.
