'Holidays are for fun, not fights' - court tells tourists after Paceville brawl

Spanish men handed suspended sentence for injuring clubgoer

Two Spanish tourists were handed a suspended sentence after getting involved in a fight which caused grievous injuries to a third man.

Alex Pérez Casares, 21, and Joaquín Alfaro Sánche, 22, pleaded guilty to causing grievous injuries to another man during an argument at Clique Club in Paceville early on Friday morning. They were also accused of insulting and threatening him and breaching public peace.

Police Inspector Jonathan Cassar told the court that the police assistance was requested at the popular club due to an argument. When the officers arrived, they found the victim with visible facial injuries. The victim indicated the two men to the police before he was taken to Mater Dei Hospital in an ambulance for treatment.

The two men were arrested and taken to the Police Headquarters for questioning. One of the accused missed his flight to appear in court on Friday.

The court, presided by magistrate Jean Paul Grech, handed them a two-year prison term suspended for four years. A three-year restraining order in favour of the victim was also issued.

Before they left the courtroom, the magistrate addressed the accused telling them: “I hope you’ve learnt your lesson. When you go on holiday, you do not do so to enter into fights and injure others, but to enjoy yourselves and have fun.”

AG lawyer Martina Muscat prosecuted assisted by police inspectors Jonathan Cassar and Nico Zarb.

Legal aid lawyer Mark Mifsud Cutajar assisted the accused.
