Holocaust Memorial Day was recently marked by embassies in Malta together with the Ministry of Education and Culture, Youths and Sport and the University of Malta. President Emeritus Guido de Marco delivered the keynote speech entitled 'The Shame of the Holocaust'.
The short documentary Nicholas Winton - The Power of Good, exploring the story of the man who saved over 600 Czech children from the Nazis, was screened.
This was followed by a musical interlude by the Mediterranean Institute - University of Malta string ensemble. The performed piece, Studie for String Orchestra, was written by Czech composer Pavel Haas, who was imprisoned in the Terezin concentration camp and died in a gas chamber at Auschwitz.
Copies of a book on Nicholas Wilton were donated to the Culture Ministry to be placed in public school libraries.
