A lovable poodle was rescued yesterday morning, after it had been cruelly tied to the ground and left stranded for three days and nights in a Gzira road.
Residents in Col Savona Street yesterday informed the Association for Abandoned Animals that a black dog, aged about nine months, had been abandoned at the weekend.
The dog's lead was pinned under a large boulder.
Freddie Fenech, who runs the association, said the dog's misery was probably prolonged by the fact that there were few residents in the area. The road is full of offices - which were empty over the weekend.
He claimed that some residents did report the case to other authorities and animal organisations, but no action was taken.
"A resident told me the dog didn't stop whining for three days, and by the second day they started giving it food and water," Mr Fenech said.
But none of the residents took the dog in, just in case its owner returned to claim it.
"It would have been better had this dog's owner let it run free rather than tied it to the ground - it would have had more chance of survival," an angry Mr Fenech said.
"We receive about three reports of abandoned dogs every day, and this has become a huge problem. When are people going to stop being cruel to these harmless creatures?" he asked.
