Homeless man jailed 24 months for cannabis possession, trafficking
He was found with 36 sachets of the drug
A homeless man was jailed for 24 months for possessing and trafficking cannabis and synthetic cannabis after being caught with 36 sachets of the drug in his clothes.
Abubaker Adam Ismail, 34 from Sudan, was apprehended on February 15 after he ran away from police officers after spotting them on Marsa Road in Marsa.
A search of Ismail yielded 30 sachets of cannabis, six sachets of synthetic cannabis and cash, which was found in the man’s jacket and trousers. The drugs were determined not to be for personal consumption, police said.
The man was charged with trafficking synthetic drugs, committing the crime within 100 metres of where youths usually meet up and recidivism.
The man pleaded guilty on Sunday.
In a judgement handed down on Thursday, magistrate Astrid May Grima jailed the man for 24 months and fined him €2,000.
The court also ordered that the Principal Immigration Officer is served with a copy of the judgement to take the necessary action under the Immigration Act if it deems fit.
