Homes are sought for a number of puppies and their mother, Dora, a pointer which was thrown on the streets of Xaghra, when it was pregnant.
Dora came to the attention of the SPCA (Gozo) quite recently, when people in the neighbourhood started complaining about the mess it was making by emptying garbage bags to find food.
The SPCA rescue van collected the dog but there was no sign of puppies, so it was assumed that maybe they had been given homes. Two days later the strays officer took Dora back and there, under the carob tree where he had first found it, were nine puppies, about five weeks old and looking unbelievably healthy.
"Here natural instinct took over, with Dora regurgitating quantities of partially digested food for the puppies to eat. This was followed by a much needed session at Dora's overflowing milk bar," Betty Barry, one of the people behind the Gozo SPCA said.
Dora and the puppies can be adopted and anyone who is interested can call 2155 3769 or 9980 7067.
