Around Lm5,000 in cash were stolen from the San Pawl Hotel in Qawra early yesterday morning.

The police said two hooded men, armed with a handgun, entered the hotel's reception area and ordered the 41-year-old receptionist to give them the money.

Sources said Lm2,820 in Maltese notes, and around Lm2,200 in foreign currency, were stolen.

The hotel's security officer gave chase but the two men escaped in a car, which was parked at the end of the road. Nobody was injured in the theft.

Duty magistrate Anthony Vella appointed experts to help him in the inquiry. Qawra police are investigating.
