People with disabilities will be offered the opportunity to buy a subsidised residence through interest-free monthly instalments in a new sale issue to be launched by the Housing Authority.

The authority said in this way it would be reaching out to these people, helping them to take up their own property and live more independently in the community.

Ten per cent of the authority's subsidised units are reserved for people with disabilities. However, these people sometimes encountered difficulties in acquiring loans from banks, the authority said.

Chairman Marisa Micallef said the Housing Authority board was continually refining its schemes, taking into consideration feedback from applicants and from the commission for persons with disabilities.

The new service will be open to disabled people in employment, with the usual conditions attached to the sale of premises. Further details on eligibility criteria will be announced in the next sale issue which will be held this August.
