Following the appointment of Mr Farrugia, HSBC's board of directors now includes six Maltese, including chairman Albert Mizzi, executive director Dr Philip Farrugia Randon and directors Victor Scicluna, Louis A. The other three directors on the board are Dyfrig John, based in London, the local chief executive officer, Shaun Wallis, and chief operating officer Martin Wilkins.

"As the world's local bank, HSBC in Malta has always been committed to giving its local employees the opportunity to reach the highest managerial positions," Mr Mizzi said.

"Charles has had a distinguished career at the bank and he will undoubtedly be a great asset to HSBC's board of directors, helping the bank in Malta to move forward and successfully face the challenges of the future. I would personally like to congratulate him on his appointment and welcome him to the board. I look forward to working closely with him in the months and years ahead."

Mr Farrugia, who has been employed with the bank since 1975, has occupied various managerial posts. He was appointed chief dealer in 1995, group senior treasury manager in 1999, and managing director of HSBC Stockbrokers (Malta) Limited in 2001. Currently Mr Farrugia is head of Corporate Investment Banking and Markets.

"It is an honour for me to be given this appointment to serve on HSBC Bank Malta's board of directors. I look forward to meeting the challenges that this new role will provide and in playing my role in the continued development of HSBC in Malta," Mr Farrugia said.
