A huge structure has taken over Valletta’s entrance. Here’s what people think
You can't miss the new landmark pavillion that will house an 'immersive' experience
If you visit Valletta, you can’t miss the giant structure that has appeared not far from City Gate.
Once it opens to the public, it will host an “immersive” experience tied to the government’s Vision 2050.
Journalist Emma Borg spoke to residents and visitors to find out what they make of the installation, which is expected to remain in place for the next few months.
Reactions were mixed. Some called it a “monstrosity” that blocks the city’s entrance and questioned why it needed to be placed there. Others saw it as a curiosity and said they are looking forward to stepping inside.
Asked what Malta might look like by 2050, some predicted “cars galore”, overpopulation, or even a “second Dubai”. Others hoped for better public transport and a country that holds on to its values as it develops.
The unfinished large blue structure near the Triton Fountain and opposite the Phoenicia Hotel in Floriana has been growing over the last week and even necessitated a fresh pedestrian crossing.
A spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister said it will contain a free 15-minute experience where visitors can go on a journey with two virtual children witnessing the future of Malta.
"The Maltese national bird - the Blue Rock Thrush (il-Merill) will accompany them on their quest as they unlock the different Pillars of the Vision," he explained.
While the structure currently looks blue, it will be covered in a special material that will reflect its surroundings.
A consultation document for Malta Vision 2050 was released earlier this year. Since then, Transport Minister Chris Bonett has also promised details of a new mass transport system will be announced as part of the vision for the next 24 years.
