The sacking of Phil Brown as manager of Hull City brought the total of dismissals to five in the Premier League this season. The changes at the helm were as follows:

November 24: Avram Grant for Paul Hart at Portsmouth.

December 19: Roberto Mancini for Mark Hughes at Manchester City.

January 5: Owen Coyle for Gary Megson at Bolton.

January 6: Brian Laws for Coyle at Burnley.

March 15: Iain Dowie for Phil Brown at Hull.

• First Division side Ross County knock out Hibernian 2-1 to reach the last four of the Scottish Cup. County rewrite their history books since they had never reached this stage of the competition before.

• Portsmouth have been given special permission by the Premier League to sell players outside the transfer window (cannot play for another Premier League club this term) to ease their financial crisis.

• Celtic sack manager Tony Mowbray after nine months and appoint Neil Lennon on temporary charge. Mowbray had replaced Gordon Strachan in the summer.

• At Wembley, Southampton beat Carlisle 4-1 to lift the JP Trophy, the knockout silverware for the lower two divisions and Conference clubs.

• In the Champions League quarter-finals, first legs, Manchester United go down 1-2 to Bayern in Munich and Arsenal draw 2-2 with Barcelona at the Emirates Stadium.

• England climb one place to seventh in the FIFA rankings.
