‘Hundreds’ queuing outside JobsPlus in Gozo for pre-election jobs: Alex Borg
Borg assures all those given a job will be retained under a PN government
Hundreds of people are queuing daily outside JobsPlus offices in Gozo for pre-election jobs, Alex Borg said on Sunday.
Addressing a political event in Gozo’s capital, Victoria, the PN leader slammed the government for stringing Gozitans along with promises of jobs throughout its term, only to tell them to register for work on the eve of an election.
Borg said a PN government will ensure job creation throughout the legislature.
The PN leader questioned why the government, which won the last general election by 40,000 votes, is in such a panic to give everyone government jobs.
He linked this “panic” to the fact that Gozitans now have one of their own as a leader of the Nationalist Party.
He assured those given a job prior to the election that their employment would be safe under a PN government.
“A PN government will keep you there, do not worry, your job is guaranteed. Even if you do not agree with us, you can still work with us.
“Employment is a fundamental right. Do not worry, if you get a government job now, no one will fire you. A PN government will keep you on,” Borg said.
Apart from ensuring a strong civil service, Borg said a PN government will create quality jobs in Gozo.
Borg said during a meeting with tech giants Google in Brussels, he realised how big companies can be incentivised to set up in Gozo’s innovation hub.
He said ensuring the creation of quality jobs in Gozo will mean Gozitans will not be faced with a choice of either leaving the country to work abroad or going to work in Malta.
'Gozitans know where they stand with me'
Borg took aim at Prime Minister Robert Abela for his sudden interest in Gozo.
He noted how in his speeches, Abela has taken to mentioning Gozitans before Maltese.
“I do not need to do this; Gozitans know where they stand with me. Gozitans want a Gozitan prime minister, who will put Gozo on the national agenda,” Borg said.
The PN leader questioned what has become of Labour’s 2022 electoral manifesto pledges for Gozo.
He noted how pledges ranging from a new 130-bed hospital, a Marsalforn breakwater and a multi-level car park, together with other promises, had failed to come to fruition.
Borg said for all its faults, the PN in government had delivered on its promises for Gozo.
He apologised for all those who had been let down by the party when it was in government.
Borg said the PN will welcome everyone who wants to be a part of it.
He paid tribute to lawyer Edmond Cuschieri, whom he described as an ex-Labourite who is now a PN candidate.
Cuschieri, who addressed the PN activity before Borg on Sunday, said that this will be the first time he will be voting for the PN.
Borg warned that the upcoming election would not be a normal one.
“It is a choice for our children, for what future we want for them. We have built enormous momentum, but there is more to do. This is the moment,” Borg said.
