Earlier, Canada beat Russia 8-3 to take the bronze. After a slow start, Hungary found their form in the second quarter by outscoring the defending champions 5-1 to surge in front 7-3.

But the US tightened up defensively in the second half and struck for four unanswered goals, to pull level at 7-7 sending the contest into extra-time.

The eventual success put Hungary back on top of the podium for the first time since the 1994 world championships.

Final rankings

1. Hungary; 2. US; 3. Canada; 4. Russia; 5. Greece; 6. Australia; 7. Italy; 8. Germany.
