I was surprised, indeed astonished, to read that a Labour MP, Michael Falzon, had tabled a petition in Parliament on behalf of the trappers and hunters federation.
My heart bleeds for the suffering of the poor trappers, unable to trap finches these past months. However, it bleeds much more at the distress and cruelty caused to the wretched creatures by the execrable and barbaric practice of trapping wild birds. We are in the 21st century after all!
Perhaps if Dr Falzon, himself, were to be confined in a cage, even for a week or two, he might sing a different tune.
While we are on this distressing subject, wouldn't it be a super wheeze if we were able to train some of the birds to fire back at the Neanderthals who persist in taking pot shots at them? If nothing else, it would even out the odds just a little.
