'I will kill you': Man threatens HSBC manager after withdrawal request denied

The man stood outside the bank's doors with a screwdriver

A 23 year old man has pleaded guilty to threatening the branch manager of the HSBC branch in Żurrieq with a screwdriver, telling her that he was going to kill her.

The court heard how on June 17, at around 12.45pm, the Zurrieq police station received a call regarding an individual who was making threats outside the bank's doors while holding a screwdriver and shouting, "I will kill you, I will kill you."

The man, whose name cannot be published by court order due to mental health issues, went to the bank to withdraw money. The court was told that the man has a limit on the amount of money he can withdraw. When his request to withdraw a bigger amount was denied by the branch manager, he began shouting and threatened to retaliate.

The man then left the bank and went to his mother's house. Following the disturbance, the branch manager called the mother to inform her of her son's behaviour. While they were still on the phone, the accused grabbed the mobile phone from his mother and threatened to kill the branch manager.

The accused subsequently returned outside the bank holding a screwdriver, and started shouting that he was going to kill the branch manager.

The youth pleaded guilty to all charges brought against him and defence requested a pre-sentencing report before the final judgment is delivered.

The Court acceded to the request and granted him bail pending sentencing, under the conditions that he resides with his parents, signs the bail book at the local police station three times a week and provides a personal guarantee of €7,000.

The Court also issued a protection order in favour of the victim.

Inspector Andrew Agius Bonello led the prosecution. Lawyers Franco Debono and Silvan Pulis appeared for the accused.
